Nuclei of the glossopharyngeal nerve

  • Main motor nucleus
  • Receives corticonuclear fibers from both cerebral hemispheres \
  • Supply the stylopharyngeus muscle
  • Parasympathetic nucleus (Inferior salivatory nucleus)
  • Afferents from the thalamus, olfactory system & oral cavity (Regarding information on taste)
  • Efferent fibers to the parotid gland
  • [Tympanic branch to Tympanic plexus to Lesser petrosal nerve to Otic ganglion to Parotid salivary gland]
  • Sensory nucleus (Part of the nucleus of the tractus solitarius)
  • Efferents on general sensation & taste from posterior 1/3 of the tongue & pharynx travel to the lower part of the post central gyrus
  • Afferent impulses from carotid baroreceptors travel to the nucleus of the tractus solitarius
  • NTS is connected to the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus
  • (Carotid sinus reflex, involves IX & X nerves in regulation of BP)
