Glossopharyngeal nerve nuclei & their central connections
Distribution of the glossopharyngeal nerve
Nuclei of the glossopharyngeal nerve
|
- Receives corticonuclear fibers from both cerebral hemispheres \
- Supply the stylopharyngeus muscle
|
- Parasympathetic nucleus (Inferior salivatory nucleus)
|
- Afferents from the thalamus, olfactory system & oral cavity (Regarding information on taste)
- Efferent fibers to the parotid gland
- [Tympanic branch to Tympanic plexus to Lesser petrosal nerve to Otic ganglion to Parotid salivary gland]
|
- Sensory nucleus (Part of the nucleus of the tractus solitarius)
|
- Efferents on general sensation & taste from posterior 1/3 of the tongue & pharynx travel to the lower part of the post central gyrus
- Afferent impulses from carotid baroreceptors travel to the nucleus of the tractus solitarius
- NTS is connected to the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus
- (Carotid sinus reflex, involves IX & X nerves in regulation of BP)
