Also known as systemic sclerosis, this is a connective tissue disease affecting multiple organs. The thorax is commonly affected (most commonly the lungs or oesophagus). May be part of CREST syndrome (calcinosis, Raynaud’s, oesophageal dysmotility, scleroderma and telangiectasia).
PLAIN FILM
• The classic appearance is a dilated oesophagus with basal fibrosis.
HRCT
• Basal interstitial lung disease is common (65%, though only a third have symptoms), most commonly NSIP pattern (also UIP).
• Check for evidence of pulmonary hypertension.
