Also known as pleomorphic sarcoma, this is the most common primary malignant soft tissue tumour of adulthood (>40 years of age). It is aggressive and presents with an enlarging, painless intramuscular thigh mass. Treatment is with excision. MFH may metastasise to the lungs.
MRI
• Intramuscular mass with non-specific signal characteristics.
• Foci of calcification are low signal on T1 and T2.
• Foci of haemorrhage (may be high signal on T1) and necrosis (high signal on T2).
• Peripheral/nodular enhancement with contrast.
NUCLEAR MEDICINE
• Bone scans are sensitive for detecting bone metastases.
