Caused by a hepatitis virus or Epstein-Barr virus. Associated with raised transaminases and positive serum antibodies.
US
• Hepatosplenomegaly
• Diffuse decrease in liver echogenicity
• Increased brightness of the portal triads resulting in ‘starry sky’ appearance
• Oedema of the gallbladder fossa and gallbladder wall thickening
CT
• Hepatosplenomegaly.
• Gallbladder wall thickening.
• Periportal oedema.
• Regenerative nodules and lymph node enlargement (porta hepatis, gastrohepatic ligament and retroperitoneum) are features of chronic hepatitis.
