Performed for bleeding oesophageal or gastric varices due to portal hypertension when endoscopic therapy has failed. The aim is to stop bleeding and prevent re-bleeding. A pathway is created between the portal vein and hepatic veins, which is kept patent with a stent, typically with jugular access.
Complications include arteriovenous (AV) fistula and stent stenosis/occlusion.
