Common, mostly arising due to trauma or arthritis; >80% of patients with pain and TMJ dysfunction have evidence of TMJ disc displacement on MRI. It is more common in females.
• Gold standard for assessing internal derangement.
• Coronal and sagittal reformats with the jaw open and closed are optimal.
• Disc displacement is most commonly anterior or anteromedial/lateral.
• Look for evidence of osteoarthritis.
