The preferred approach is right lateral for liver biopsy, or anterior sub-costal if there is respiratory compromise (patient can sit up more easily). Traversing normal liver reduces the risk of bleeding.
Consent for:
• Haemorrhage, pneumothorax, biliary peritonitis, bowel/gallbladder perforation, arterioportal shunt (all 1/300, tend to occur in first 24 hours).
• Overall risk of death is 1/10,000 in those with liver disease.
