Due to ingestion of alkaline (‘lye’) or acidic substances. There is an increased risk of malignancy (squamous cell carcinoma).
BARIUM SWALLOW
• Most common acute finding is spasm, atony or dilation (i.e. motility disorder).
• Superficial mucosal irregularity and perforation.
• Chronically, there is fibrosis and stricturing (more common after alkali ingestion).
