These are unusual overall; 90% are benign hyperplastic polyps that have no malignant potential. They arise in the body of the stomach against a background of chronic gastritis, as well as syndromes including FAP, Peutz-Jegher, Cronkhite-Canada, Cowden and Gardner, in addition to juvenile polyposis.
Endoscopy is the preferred examination.
BARIUM MEAL
• Round, smooth and sessile
• Up to 1 cm in size
• Commonly multiple
• Note up to 25% have a synchronous gastric cancer
• If >2 cm, more likely an adenomatous polyp (malignant in 50%)
