“A rare tumour arising from mesenchymal tissue
most common tumour of late adult life is the ‘pleomorphic undifferentiated sarcoma’ (formerly malignant fibrous histiocytoma) – commonly occurring in the extremities and retroperitoenum
Radiological features
- Poorly characterized by imaging
- Most tumours are well defined (associated pseudocapsule)
- ill defined lesions can be benign (e.g. aggressive fibromatosis or post traumatic) and therefore not predictive of malignant potential
- Features suspicious of malignancy:
- deep seated large mass (a significant minority arise superficially in skin and subcutaneous fat)
- heterogenous appearances on MRI
- tumour necrosis
- size >5 cm
