Very common incidental finding affecting up to 30% of the population. It is a congenital anomaly. Splenunculi may hypertrophy if the main organ is removed. Splenosis is ectopic splenic tissue that may develop after splenectomy or splenic rupture (may mimic malignant peritoneal nodules).
CT
• Small (10 mm), well defined
• Identical attenuation and enhancement characteristics to the spleen
• Usually located near the splenic hilum
NUCLEAR MEDICINE
• Technetium-99m heat-denatured erythrocyte scan shows uptake in ectopic splenic tissue.
