The shunt is either between the artery and portal vein or between the artery and hepatic vein. May be due to trauma (including biopsy), cirrhosis, portal hypertension, tumour or hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (Osler-Weber-Rendu disease).
• Increased colour flow

• Blush of contrast.
• Large shunts can cause heart failure.
