Tends to present with hearing loss with or without vertigo in patients aged between 20 and 40 years.
Accounts for about 10% of NF, inherited by autosomal dominance (deletion on chromosome 22).
MRI
• Bilateral acoustic schwannoma with or without enlargement of the internal acoustic meatus, may contain foci of calcification, rarely cystic.
• There are schwannomas on spinal roots in up to 90% and other cranial nerves in up to 50%.
• Associated with cord/brain ependymoma in up to 10%.
• Diffuse enhancement of schwannoma.
