1. Discuss the case with the responsible radiographer and referring team to establish the circumstances of the incident.
2. Contact the medical physics department to advise them of the incident. They should begin an investigation into the circumstances of the event and likely foetal dose.
3. Discuss the case with the referring team and offer to counsel the patient regarding risks to the foetus.
1. Foetal risk is highest in the first trimester.
2. In most cases, a dose <100 mGy is unlikely to have an adverse effect on the foetus. Above this, there is an increased risk of learning disability or induction of malignancy.
3. In normal circumstances, diagnostic scans are well below the threshold. Exposure for an interventional procedure could exceed 100 mGy.
