This is a major cause of stroke, typically caused by atherosclerosis at the carotid bulb and the proximal segment of the internal carotid artery. Note that the internal carotid artery is also the second most common site for fibromuscular dysplasia stenosis after the kidneys.
• More than 70% stenosis increases systolic and diastolic flow velocity.
• Systolic flow >230 cm/second and diastolic flow >110 cm/second are significant.
