‘Carotid body tumour’. These arise at the carotid bifurcation and splay the internal and external carotid arteries. They typically occur in the fifth decade and present with a slow-growing pulsatile neck mass that may compress an adjacent nerve.
MRI
• 5% are bilateral
• Often multiple masses that enhance densely
• Low T1, high T2 mass with multiple flow voids giving a salt and pepper appearance
