These result from congenital focal or diffuse dilatation of the bile ducts. They are the most common congenital lesions of the gallbladder. They are associated with biliary stasis leading to infection, inflammation and stone disease. There is a 20-fold increased risk of cholangiocarcinoma.
US

• Most commonly there is simply common bile duct (CBD) dilatation with normal intrahepatic ducts (type I).
HIDA SCAN
•  Demonstrates cystic structure connected to the biliary system.
•  Positive result shows a photopenic area that fills within 60 minutes, with a paucity of contrast/lack of visualisation in the small bowel.
