Due to excess iron deposition in the tissues, either primary (autosomal recessive) or secondary to ineffective erythropoiesis (myelofibrosis), ineffective absorption or iron overload. The brain, heart (heart failure is the leading cause of death), liver (increased risk of hepatoma) and pancreas are also affected.
PLAIN FILM
- Osteoporosis (proportional to the extent of iron deposition)
- Small subchondral cysts in the metacarpal heads
- Enlargement and flattening of the metacarpal heads
- Chrondrocalcinosis (60%)
- Characteristic hooked osteophytes (differentiates from pseudogout) on the radial aspect of the metacarpal heads, index and middle fingers especially
MRI
- Bone marrow is low signal on T1- and T2-weighted imaging.
