This is more common in girls and is often undetected until adulthood. It is associated with a breech delivery, positive family history, prune belly syndrome and oligohydramnios. Early intervention reduces the risk of teenage-onset osteoarthritis.
• Performed at 1/12 of age (indicated if the hips feel unstable on examination or if there is a family history of hip dysplasia, breech delivery, premature or multiple birth).
• In the coronal plane, the a angle represents the angle between the iliac bone (‘baseline’) and the acetabular roof (‘inclination line’); >60° is normal, <50° represents poor acetabular concavity seen in dysplasia.
• The P angle lies between the acetabular labrum and iliac bone and is a measure of roof coverage;
<55° is normal and indicates adequate bony coverage
