Congenital cystic renal destruction thought to be due to ureteral obstruction in utero.
Contralateral abnormalities are common (e.g. PUJ obstruction).
US
• Multiple cysts separated by echogenic fibrous tissue, minimal vascularity, may mimic hydronephrosis
• ‘Cluster of grapes’ appearance: visible cysts are usually anechoic and of variable sizes ( usually none communicating)
NUCLEAR MEDICINE
• No excretion on MAG3
Prognosis
- This depends upon the function of thecontralateral kidney (bilateral MCDK is incompatible with life)
- the contralateral kidney is associated with PUJ obstruction or ureteric stenosis (30%)
