These are signal changes seen in the endplates and subchondral bone of the vertebral bodies in the context of degenerative disease. They may be associated with lower back pain. The pathogenesis is thought to be partly biomechanical and biochemical. The lumbar spine is more commonly affected (especially L4-5 and L5-S1).
Type II is the most common type; type I is more symptomatic.
