This is the most common benign oesophageal tumour (accounts for 50% of benign oesophageal tumours) —others are fibrovascular polyps, papilloma and glycogenic acanthosis. Leiomyoma is a benign tumour of the smooth muscle; it is often asymptomatic, but can present with haematemesis. It is more common in men.
BARIUM SWALLOW
• Large, well-defined, lobulated intramural mass causing a luminal deformity.
• Lower or middle third of the oesophagus.
• It is the only oesophageal tumour to calcify.
Semilunar smooth filling defect is present at junction of mid & distal oesophagous, most consistent with a submucosal mass.
