This is a rare disease due to gastric gland hypertrophy, which sheds protein into the gut. In total, 10% of affected patients will get gastric cancer. Patients present with pain, weight loss, oedema, etc., due to protein loss.
BARIUM MEAL
• Marked thickening and tortuosity of the rugae, though the stomach distends normally (unlike with malignancy).
• The antrum is spared in 50%.
• Folds alter in size and position during the examination.
• Mucous hypersecretion causes dilution of contrast.
• Small bowel fold thickening.
• Ulceration due to achlorydia.
CT
• Thickened gastric folds project into the gastric lumen.
• The serosal contour is smooth.
