Occur in women with functioning ovaries and a history of abdominal surgery/adhesions. Adhesions are thought to prevent normal absorption of ovarian fluid leading to a build-up that surrounds the ovary.
US
• Septated fluid collection associated with the ovary
• Ovary may have a normal appearance
CT
• Multi-loculated fluid collection (may appear hyperdense due to blood products)
• Enhancing soft tissue (ovary) within the fluid collection
MRI
• Used for problem-solving to exclude malignancy
• No enhancing solid components
