This is a condition causing dilatation of the ducts of the submucosal glands of the oesophagus.
It is associated with diabetes, chronic alcoholism and severe oesophagitis.
In total, 90% have a history of reflux, and Candida may be cultured in about 50%.
BARIUM SWALLOW
• Multiple tiny, flask-shaped collections of barium arranged in longitudinal rows.
• These appear to ‘float’ outside the oesophagus, as the connection to the lumen may not be appreciated.
• Associated strictures in the distal oesophagus are common.
Intramural pseudodiverticulosis. Barium swallow demonstrating a strictured segment of oesophagus with small flaskshaped collections.
