This is widespread in the older population and is the most common crystalline arthropathy. It is caused by deposition of crystals in synovial fluid and cartilage and is associated with four clinical patterns:
- pyrophosphate arthopathy,
- pseudogout (the acute manifestation),
- rheumatoid-like
- asymptomatic crystal deposition.
Crystals show weak positive birefringence on polarised light microscopy.
