Bone scans are highly sensitive and of variable specificity (like many nuclear medicine scans). The most common radiotracer is technetium-99m, which has a half-life of 6 hours. Images are often acquired 3 hours after injection (delayed phase) when tracer localises to the bone. However, imaging may be performed immediately (vascular phase) or after a few minutes (blood pool/tissue phase).
