Abnormal cleft lined with polymicrogyric grey matter linking the pial and ependymal surfaces. May communicate openly with the ventricular system. In total, 90% have an absent septum pellucidum. Linked to polymicrogyria and septo-optic dysplasia.
MRI
• Cleft lined by grey matter; if there is CSF in the cleft it is known as ‘open lipped’, if there is not it is ‘close lipped’.
• Note: A porencephalic cleft (i.e. old hypoxic ischaemic injury [HII]) can appear similar but is lined by white matter.
