Air-fluid levels and mild mucosal thickening is only indicative with a relevant history. Usually a viral aetiology. Complications of sinusitis include polyps, mucous retention cyst and mucocele.
CT
• Opacification of the sinus/mucosal thickening.
• Sinus expands and bone remodels (bony wall may thin due to pressure necrosis).
• Peripheral enhancement.
• Complete absence of air in the sinus represents a mucocele.
• If there is some air in the sinus, it may represent a mucous retention cyst (difficult to distinguish from a polyp).
