In 90% of cases, this is secondary to gastrinoma, a gastrin-secreting islet cell tumour.
This leads to increased production of gastric HCl.
Patients present with pain, diarrhoea and recurrent ulcers. In total, 25% are associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type-1.
BARIUM MEAL
• Thickened gastric or duodenal folds.
• Ulcers are most commonly found in the first part of the duodenum (10% have multiple ulcers).
• Dilatation of proximal small bowel due to hypersecretion.
