This is the most common cause of a limp in children aged 5-10 years.
It is a self-limiting inflammation of the hip synovium.
The aetiology is unclear, but may be related to viral infection, previous trauma or allergy.
It is important to exclude septic arthritis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
US
• Joint effusion in the anterior recess (capsular distension >2 mm).
• No synovial thickening.
• Effusion resolves after 10-15 days.
