Focal protrusion
- Disc material protrudes so that the displaced material is <25%/90° of the body circumference on axial slices.
Broad-based protrusion
- Disc material protrudes so that the displaced material is >25%/90° of the body circumference on axial slices.
Bulge
- Annulus extends >3 mm beyond the vertebral body margin >50%/180° of the body circumference.
Extrusion
- Disc material is expelled from its containment through an aperture (i.e. it has a neck).
Sequestrated disc or free fragment
- A fragment of disc that has separated from its parent entirely and is therefore found away from the level of the pathological disc.
Annular fissure
- Separation of annular fibres, may occur in the radial, transverse or concentric plane. High signal on T2 magnetic resonance imaging sequences and may enhance post-contrast.
