Rare disease due to a hereditary dysfunction of phosphate metabolism. The end result is prominent periarticular calcified masses, especially around large joints. The masses are painless and occur most frequently in children and adolescents of African descent.
PLAIN FILM
• Densely calcified, amorphous, loculated and lobulated peri-articular masses.
• Most commonly around the extensor surface of the shoulders, hips and elbows.
• Masses are extra-articular and so do not usually affect joint movement (unless very large).
• Initially, however, only faint calcification may be seen within the multiloculated lesions.
• A periosteal reaction may be present due to bone marrow involvement.
