This is the most common cause of a mass in the popliteal fossa. It represents fluid from an over-filled bursa lying between the semimembranosus and the medial head of the gastrocnemius. Most commonly associated with osteoarthritis.
PLAIN FILM
• Soft tissue mass in the posteromedial compartment
• Small foci of calcification
US
• Anechoic collection communicating with the knee joint
• Posterior acoustic enhancement
• Loose bodies within the cyst
• No vascularity (unlike a popliteal artery aneurysm)
