This is a rare, benign, self-limiting condition also known as infantile cortical hyperostosis. It occurs in those aged less than 6 months and is associated with fever, soft tissue swelling and irritability combined with a characteristic x-ray appearance.
PLAIN FILM
• Soft tissue swelling.
• Marked cortical hyperostosis (mandible affected in 80%).
• Cortex appears lamellated.
• Diaphyseal—the epiphyses are spared.
