The cervical spine reaches adult proportions by age 8-10 years; beyond 12 years, the effects of cervical spine trauma are similar to those of adults.
PLAIN FILM

•  Traumatic cervical spine injuries occur most between the skull base and C3 in children.

•  Normal findings in children:
–  Pre-dentate space less than 5 mm.
–  Anterior wedging at C3.
–  Soft tissues thicker between C2 and C4 than a half-vertebral body.
–  Pseudosubluxation at C2-3 and C3-4.
•  Pseudosubluxation is common in children aged less than 8 years due to ligament laxity and horizontal facet alignment; it reduces on extension (>2 mm displacement from the posterior cervical line is pathological).
