“• Positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography is highly sensitive for diagnosis and follow-up of head and neck cancer.
• Standardised uptake value (SUV) is a measure of the relative activity of a lesion on PET, adjusted according to dose given and patient size. SUV >3 is pathological.
• In patients with head and neck cancer, a single ipsilateral enlarged node means a reduction of survival by 50%.
• Know the lymph node levels of the head and neck and their boundaries (e.g. the hyoid/carotid bifurcation divides II from III; the junction of the hyoid muscle with the sternocleidomastoid muscle divides III from IV).
