Children are more susceptible to poisoning from lead found in the environment and industry. Lead deposition occurs in high concentrations in the metaphyses. It presents with loss of appetite, anaemia, vomiting, constipation and abdominal pain. Affected patients are short for their age.
PLAIN FILM
• Delayed skeletal maturity.
• Bands of increased density at metaphyses of tubular bones (femur, tibia and radius, particularly).
• Metaphyseal bands may be normal in a child aged <3 years.
• ‘Bone in bone’ appearance.
• Differential: healed rickets, leukaemia or scurvy.
