Gas within the renal parenchyma due to multiple small abscesses, mostly in patients with diabetes, obstruction or immunodeficiency. It is a life-threatening, fulminant infection. Emphysematous pyelitis is gas only in the collecting system. Pyonephrosis indicates an infected, obstructed system.
