Renal abscess usually occurs as a complication of pyelonephritis.
ULTRASOUND (US)
• Cortical/corticomedullary, well-defined, hypoechoic area.
• Also look for a perinephric collection.
COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT)
• Low-attenuation mass with an irregular enhancing thick wall.
• Gas within the mass supports the diagnosis.
• Perinephric fat stranding/fluid collection likely.
• Extrarenal abscess may involve the psoas and extend to the groin.
