This is a common, benign lung neoplasm peaking in the sixth decade. A minority (10%) are endobronchial.
PLAIN FILM
• Smooth, marginated nodule, frequently calcified.
• Two-thirds in the lung periphery.
• Look for atelectasis/consolidation, suggesting an endobronchial lesion.
CT
• Fat attenuation of the nodule (50%)
• Or a combination of fat and calcification
• Diffuse popcorn calcification (classic)
NUCLEAR MEDICINE
• Note: Up to 20% are hot on PET
