This is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine of >10°; it is mostly idiopathic and painless (80%). Congenital scoliosis accounts for another 10%. Causes of painful scoliosis include tumour (e.g. osteoid osteoma or GCT), infection, degeneration and trauma. Lateral curvature <10° that is asymptomatic and does not progress is known as spinal asymmetry.
X-RAY

•  Mainstay for diagnosis and monitoring is the Cobb angle—the angle made by intersecting lines drawn parallel to the endplate of the superior end vertebra and another drawn parallel to the endplate of the inferior end vertebra.
•  The angle is measured in increments of 5°; an increase of >5° between radiographs indicates progression.
